A dinner reception was hosted by the Apeejay Stya and Svran Group to honour Pulitzer Prize winners of 2013 – Adam Johnson and Gilbert King – on theirfirst visit to India.
The party was hosted by Sushma Paul Berlia, the president of the group and chairperson of Apeejay Education Society, along with her son Aditya Berlia, joint secretary, Apeejay Education Society.
Maneka Gandhi, Union Minister for Women and Child Development and Babul Supriyo, Minister of State, Urban Development and Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, were also seen at the do.
The event was preceded by a panel discussion with Johnson and King along with Aditya Berlia at Apeejay School Seikh Sarai in the afternoon. The event also saw novelist Ira Trivedi, IPS officer Anand Kumar, Dr Mohsin Wali and Neha Berlia, among others, in attendance.
Speaking at the occasion, Sushma Paul Berlia said, “For the last 48 years we have committed ourselves to art, culture and literature and my father, the late Dr Stya Paul, was an avid reader and staunch supporter of socially relevant literature. Hence, it was a pleasure to be associated with both the Pulitzer winners who have touched upon such eye- opening issues like totalitarianism and racial injustice. I’m glad that my son is taking the same legacy forward.”
Johnson’s wife, Stephanie, told us, “This is our first visit to India and we are extremely excited. We look forward to visiting the Taj Mahal before leaving for Jaipur.” Adding to her comment, Jupiter, her 10-year-old daughter, said, “We are amazed to see the animals in India. I was amused to see so many street dogs and cows walking on the streets of Delhi.”
Gilbert, who was accompanied by his daughter Mary, said, “It’s wonderful to be here in India for the first time. We are enjoying eating Indian food.” Bollywood-singer-turned-politician Babul Supriyo was seen interacting with the guests at the party.
